Gardener and Garden Clearance Services in Weybridge

Sam is a gardener in Weybridge who covers the whole garden: regular gardening, garden clearance, lawn care, hedges and trees, planting and jet washing, plus the handyman jobs around the house. Find what you need below, or get in touch and talk it through.

Gardening and garden maintenance in Weybridge

Most gardens do not need a redesign. They need someone to turn up, cut the grass, keep the borders weeded, trim what has grown and take the mess away. That is the gardening Sam does across Weybridge: regular visits that keep a garden in order, or a one-off tidy when it has got ahead of you.

Sam has RHS gardening education and brings his own petrol and electric tools, so there is nothing for you to supply. Weeds can be dealt with by hand, or with chemical or organic treatments if you prefer, and the work changes with the season: mulching and soil preparation, protecting tender plants before the cold, and clearing leaves in autumn.

Ask Sam about gardening

A gardening visit can include

  • Mowing and edging the lawn
  • Weeding beds, borders, paths and patios
  • Pruning and deadheading shrubs and climbers
  • Soil preparation, feeding and mulching
  • Leaf clearing and a general tidy
  • Protecting tender plants before winter

Good to know

  • Visits can be regular or one-off: say what suits you
  • Weed and pest control can be manual, chemical or organic
  • Sam brings his own petrol and electric tools
  • Tell Sam about pets, ponds and any plants that matter to you

Garden clearance in Weybridge

A garden left for a season or two can disappear under brambles, ivy, long grass and self-seeded saplings. Garden clearance is how you get it back. Sam cuts the growth down, digs out what should not be there, gathers up the debris and leaves you with ground you can see and use again.

A clearance suits new homeowners, landlords between tenants, families sorting out a relative’s property, and anyone who wants a fresh start before laying a lawn or planting. No two are alike, so Sam looks at the garden first, agrees with you what stays and what goes, and gives you a quote for the job.

Ask about a garden clearance

A garden clearance can include

  • Cutting back brambles, ivy, nettles and long grass
  • Removing weeds, dead plants and unwanted shrubs
  • Old stumps taken out
  • Leaves, cuttings and garden debris gathered and removed
  • Winter tidy-ups and leaf clearance
  • Ground left ready for a lawn, planting or a new layout

Before a clearance

  • Decide what you want to keep, and point it out
  • Say how the garden is reached: a side gate, or through the house
  • Mention any shed, rubble or rubbish that also needs to go
  • Hedges and dense shrubs are checked for nesting birds before they are cut

Lawn care and mowing in Weybridge

The lawn is usually the biggest thing in a garden, and it is the first to show neglect. Regular mowing at a sensible height, crisp edges and a feed at the right time of year make more difference than any single treatment. Sam looks after lawns across Weybridge, from small squares of grass near the town centre to large family gardens.

Moss and weeds move into lawns that are shaded, compacted or cut too short. Sam treats both. Through autumn and winter he keeps leaves off the grass so it does not yellow underneath, and gets the lawn ready for spring.

Ask about lawn care

Lawn care includes

  • Mowing
  • Edging along beds, paths and drives
  • Seasonal lawn feeding
  • Weed control
  • Moss control
  • Leaf blowing and clearing

Through the year

  • Spring: first cuts, a feed and a start on the moss
  • Summer: regular mowing and edging
  • Autumn: leaf clearing and getting the lawn ready for winter
  • Winter: keeping leaves and debris off the grass

Hedge trimming and tree care in Weybridge

A hedge gives a garden its privacy and its shape, but only if it is cut. Leave one for a couple of summers and it grows out over the lawn, the path and the neighbour’s side. Sam trims and reshapes hedges, prunes shrubs and small trees, and takes on small tree work and the removal of old stumps.

Winter is the season for much of this. With the leaves down you can see the shape of a tree, and most deciduous trees and shrubs are best pruned while they are dormant. Sam works with his own petrol and electric cutters, and the cuttings are cleared away afterwards.

Ask about hedges and trees

Hedge and tree work includes

  • Hedge trimming and reshaping
  • Bringing overgrown hedges back down in height and width
  • Pruning and shaping shrubs and small trees
  • Winter pruning
  • Small tree work
  • Old stump removal

Good to know about hedges and trees

  • The main bird nesting season runs from March to August. Hedges are checked before cutting, and the work waits if a nest is in use
  • Some Weybridge trees are protected by a Tree Preservation Order or stand in a conservation area: Elmbridge Borough Council can tell you before any work is done
  • You can generally cut back branches that overhang your boundary, but it is worth a word with your neighbour first
  • Sam takes on small tree work. Ask him about anything larger

Planting and garden design

Once a garden is clear and under control, planting is what makes it yours. Sam plans and plants flowerbeds and borders, refreshes them through the seasons and sets up vegetable gardens for people who want to grow their own.

Good planting starts with the ground. Much of Weybridge sits on light, sandy soil that drains fast, while gardens down towards the Thames and the Wey can be heavier and wetter. What thrives in one will sulk in the other, so Sam looks at the soil, the light and how much time you want to give the garden before suggesting what to plant.

Ask about planting

Planting work includes

  • Seasonal planting
  • New flowerbeds and borders
  • Shrubs, perennials and climbers
  • Vegetable beds and kitchen gardens
  • Soil preparation before planting
  • Mulching to hold moisture and keep weeds down

Things to think about

  • How much sun the bed gets, and at what time of day
  • How much upkeep you want: some planting almost looks after itself
  • Pets and children: a few common garden plants are poisonous
  • When to plant: autumn and spring are kindest to new plants

Jet washing for patios, paths and drives

Paving turns green and slippery over a damp winter, and a patio you stopped noticing long ago can come up looking new. Sam jet washes patios, paths, driveways and other hard surfaces outdoors, lifting moss, algae and ground-in dirt.

It pairs naturally with a garden tidy: borders weeded, lawn edged and the paving cleaned in the same visit.

Ask about jet washing

Surfaces Sam jet washes

  • Patios and terraces
  • Paths and steps
  • Driveways
  • Block paving
  • Other hard surfaces outdoors: ask

Good to know about jet washing

  • An outside tap or a nearby water supply is needed
  • Jet washing can lift the sand from between block paving, which may need topping up afterwards
  • Loose pointing and soft stone are cleaned gently, or left alone
  • Algae comes back fastest in shade, so a clean every year keeps paving safe to walk on

Handyman jobs around the home and garden

The name says it. As well as gardening, Sam takes on the odd jobs that pile up around a house: painting and decorating, flat-pack furniture, minor repairs, curtains and blinds, and property clearances.

He also does light demolition and labouring work, and gutter cleaning. If a job needs doing and you are not sure who to ask, ask Sam. He will tell you straight whether it is one for him.

Before you book

Four things to settle before a garden clearance

A clearance goes faster, and costs less, when these are sorted out before the first cut is made.

  1. What stays and what goes

Walk round the garden and decide what you want to keep. Under the overgrowth there is often a good shrub, a fruit tree or a path worth saving. Point them out, and say so if you would like something cut hard back instead of taken out.

  2. How the garden is reached

A side gate makes everything quicker. If the only way in is through the house or a shared passage, say so when you get in touch: it changes how long the job takes and how the waste comes out.

  3. What else needs to go

Old sheds, broken fencing, rubble and general rubbish are a different kind of job from green waste. Mention them at the start so they can be allowed for in the quote.

  4. Trees, hedges and wildlife

Trees covered by a Tree Preservation Order, or standing in a conservation area, need the council’s say-so before work is done. Birds nest in hedges and dense shrubs from March to August, and a nest that is in use must be left alone.

The notes on protected trees and nesting birds are general guidance for England, not advice on a particular garden. Elmbridge Borough Council can tell you what applies to yours.

FAQs

Questions about gardening, hedges, lawns and clearances

What is the difference between garden clearance and garden maintenance?

A clearance is a one-off job that takes a garden back to a clean start: overgrowth cut down, weeds and unwanted plants out, debris removed. Maintenance is the regular work that keeps a garden in good order afterwards: mowing, weeding, trimming and seasonal jobs. Many gardens need one clearance and then regular maintenance.

How often should a lawn be mowed?

In the main growing season, roughly once a week, dropping to once a fortnight when growth slows in dry summer weather and in autumn. Lawns are rarely cut in winter. Cutting little and often, and never taking off more than a third of the height at once, keeps the grass thick.

When is the best time to cut a hedge?

Most established hedges are trimmed once or twice a year. Hard cutting back is best done in late winter, while a deciduous hedge is dormant and before birds start to nest. The main nesting season runs from March to August, and it is against the law to damage a nest that is in use, so Sam checks a hedge before he cuts it.

Do I need permission to prune or remove a tree in Weybridge?

Sometimes. If a tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order you need consent from Elmbridge Borough Council before it is pruned or felled. If it stands in a conservation area, the council must be given notice before work is done on any tree with a trunk more than 75mm across. The council can tell you whether either applies to your tree.

How do I get rid of moss in my lawn?

Moss is a sign that the grass is struggling, usually because of shade, poor drainage, compacted soil or mowing too short. It can be treated and raked out, but it comes back unless the cause is dealt with: raising the cutting height, feeding the lawn and letting in more light all help.

Can Sam do gardening and odd jobs in the same visit?

Yes, and that is the point of the name. A hedge cut, a patio jet washed and a fence panel painted can all be one visit. Tell Sam everything on your list when you get in touch.
